Multinational Networking and Telecommunications Equipment and Services Company Huawei has gained its number spot from OPPO, after chasing OPPO since the last quarter in 2016.Huawei played second fiddle to OPPO since quarter 3 and quarter 4 in the Chinese market last year but managed to recapture its spot early this year in this first quarter.
Huawei delivered strong results with a shipment of 20.8 million, up 25.5% from a year earlier. Oppo saw growth of 19.5% from the same period last year, while Vivo enjoyed single digit growth of 7.6%.
The biggest losers are Apple, who saw a worrying growth of – 26.7%. Chinese outfit Xiaomi also had a rough Q1, though their losses are more manageable, coming in at – 7.5%.
“China’s smartphone market continues to grow, with shipments increasing by over 9% year on year this quarter,” said Canalys Research Analyst Lucio Chen. “But there is a clear indication that the market is consolidating. The top three vendors are pulling away at the head of the market, accounting for more than 50% of shipments for the first time this quarter. In the corresponding quarter a year ago, Huawei led with Vivo second and Oppo fourth, together accounting for 42% of the market. Xiaomi took third place but has since fallen to fifth behind Apple, shipping just over 9 million units in Q1 2017.”
