Two Chinese students studying in Oregon, the US, allegedly scammed Apple out of hundreds of thousands of dollars in iPhone replacements and are now facing criminal charges in federal court, as reported by The Oregonian.

Yangyang Zhou and Quan Jiang are Chinese students who were studying engineering at Oregon State University and Linn Benton Community College on student visas. Outside of classes, they were busy importing fake smartphones from Hong Kong. They sent each iPhone to Apple store either by mail or in person, claiming that their model is not working or doesn’t turn on, to avail a brand new iPhone as part of Apple’s replacement policy “no questions asked”.

The Verge reports that the two college students were so profitable at this scam that it has cost Apple $895,800 in new iPhones, in a time span of two years. Jiang reportedly submitted over 3,000 warranty claims and as a result, Apple granted almost 1,500 replacement iPhones. According to an estimate of $600 per phone, Apple lost nearly $900,000 from this scheme. The duo allegedly shipped the fakes into the US and sent the replacements they got out of the US.

They apparently were terrified when customs officers seized suspicious shipments bearing the Apple logo, the documents noted. The Cupertino tech giant sent Jiang cease-and-desist letters after he was identified as one of the alleged smugglers by December 2017, but later on, they were ignored by customs officials.

It’s interesting to note here how a huge tech company like Apple could allow such a scam. Possibly not being able to turn on the iPhone, Apple employees didn’t verify the authenticity of those iPhones. Also, Apple doesn’t require any proof of purchase for the warranty claim and it looks like Apple employees were just following procedure.

Last year, Apple topped Fast Company’s list of the most innovative company of 2018. However, Apple hasn’t fared so well in this year’s list as it dropped by a whopping 16 places.

While Apple did come out with a few cool things like the EKG monitor on Apple Watch series 4, a thinner Macbook air, a new iPad Pro, Fast Company had other considerations. They found Apple’s A12 bionic chipset as the real innovative thing released from the company. The chipset featured on the iPhone Xs, and Xr is nothing short of breathtaking. Its ability to perform 5 trillion operations per second is really impressive. The list said,

“Apple’s most impressive new product of 2018 wasn’t a phone or a tablet, but a chip: the A12 Bionic. Debuting in last fall’s iPhones, it’s the industry’s first processor based on a seven-nanometer manufacturing process. The A12’s 6.9 billion transistors deliver dramatically faster performance, lower power consumption, and more raw muscle for intensive applications.”

It is actually interesting to see how they ignored all the products and just talked about the chipset. In many ways they are right, after all, even the new iPad Pro’s highlight feature wasn’t its screen or pencil, rather it was the chart-topping performance. Apple rightfully topped the last year chart for things like AirPods, AR and iPhone X. AirPods are considered to be the most innovative product to come out of Apple camp in the past few years.

Some of the notable emissions were Samsung, Google, and Microsoft. The list was led by Meituan Dianping, a Chinese “group buying website for locally found food delivery services, consumer products, and retail services.” They are the world’s largest online and on-demand delivery platform.

The second spot was awarded to Grab, a ride-sharing app that swallowed Uber’s Singapore operations. In 2018, the company started offering new services including food delivery and travel booking.

Other companies included in the list are NBA, Walt Disney, and Twitch. It will interesting to see if the next year’s list sees a change as Samsung’s foldable phone is, without doubt, one of the most innovative products of this year.

According to a recent study, a Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi has informed investors that replacement cycles for older iPhones are elongating beyond their expectations. Apple will face a tough period if users kept on this track since there would be lesser sales of new models and overall lesser revenue in the coming years.

There are several reasons people aren’t upgrading to the newer iPhones which include Apple’s battery replacement program as well as changes in the rates of subsidies which carriers provide on the new models as well as higher prices. This user base amounts to 16% of Apple’s customers and according to the analyst, they will be buying the new iPhone this year and will unlikely be willing to upgrade in the coming few years. This 16% of the current 900 million iPhone units translates to 144,000,000 users.

He wrote in a note to investors:

In our view, the single most important controversy surrounding Apple today is the iPhone replacement cycle – despite the iPhone installed base growing +9% last year, we now expect units to be down -19% in fiscal 2019, implying a material pushout in upgrade rates.

Tim Cook also has admitted that iPhone sales are falling because existing users are holding on to their iPhones a bit longer than in the past. Apple has also stopped disclosing how many units it sells on a quarterly basis rather they just gave a total figure of how many iPhone users there are in the world.

If you are an iPhone user, would you purchase the upcoming iPhone model this year?

The 7nm Apple A12 chipset is present under the hood of the newly unveiled iPhone Xs, iPhone Xs Max and iPhone Xr smartphones. At the launch event of the new iPhones, Apple did not confirm on their RAM capacities. However, the amount of RAM present inside the iPhone XS, XS Max and XR have been recently revealed through their AnTuTu and Geekbench listings. Now, AnTuTu has shared a new screenshot which reveals that the Apple A12 powered iPhone XS handset has recorded a marvelous score of more 363k.

In the CPU, GPU, UX and memory tests of AnTuTu, the iPhone XS has respectively scored 133,561, 150,931, 66,474 and 12,559 which brings the total benchmarking score to 363,525. Most of the Android flagship phones powered by Snapdragon 845 chipset have scored around 290k on AnTuTu which shows how powerful the Apple A12 SoC is.

Compared to the Apple A11 chipset that powers the iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X, the hexa-core A12 offers nearly 33.3 percent increased performance, doubled GPU score, 50 percent improvement in UX score and around 20 percent improvement in memory score because of which the iPhone XS has managed to achieve such an impressive benchmarking score.

The Apple A12 Bionic which includes two high-performance cores that worker 15 percent faster than the Apple A11 chipset and four power-efficiency cores that consumes 50 percent less power than A11. The SoC includes four-core GPU which also offers 50 percent better graphics performance than the GPU of A11.

The iPhone Xs features 4 GB of RAM and so does the iPhone Xs Max smartphone. The iPhone Xs and Xs Max respectively feature 5.8-inch and 6.5-inch AMOLED screens. The iPhone Xr that is equipped with a 6.1-inch LCD screen is packed with 3 GB of RAM.

The Kirin 980 that will be powering the upcoming Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro handset is also a 7nm chipset. An unconfirmed AnTuTu listing of Kirin 980 powered Mate 20 that had surfaced earlier this year had revealed an impressive benchmarking score of 350k score. However, the actual performance scores of the Kirin 980 will be revealed after the announcement of Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro that is slated to happen on Oct. 16. The 7nm Snapdragon 855 chipset is slated to go official by the end of this year. It is expected to power most of the Android flagship phones arriving in 2019.

As mentioned above, the benchmarking score of the best Android phone is 70k less than A12. However, the arrival of Kirin 980 and Snapdragon 855 will change things.

Apple introduced its top of the line smartphones for the year 2018 a couple of days ago, this is the first time that these iPhones come with dual SIM technology, which might not work for everybody though.

The most recent smartphones released by Apple, the iPhone XS, its upsized brother iPhone XS Max and the more economical iPhone XR come with an eSIM technology for the second SIM. This means that although these smartphones are dual SIM compatible, the second SIM must be an eSIM with cutting-edge electronic subscription technology.

What is an eSIM:

Short form for embedded Subscriber Identity Module, eSIM is a new technology which brings all the carriers towards using one standard chip for SIM, releasing users with the hassle of changing SIMs every now and then. More like a permanent SIM card, the eSIM is soldered right onto a specialized port and it stays there permanently as the user switches between different carriers. But, as you’d have already guessed, this technology isn’t supported by every country.

What countries does it work in:

As the eSIM technology is a relatively new phenomenon, it’s only present in 10 countries and only works for the following carriers. India is included in the list, but Pakistan isn’t.

For China, albeit, the state of affairs is a bit different. Apple chose to roll-out all of these iPhones with two physical trays in China, the world’s largest smartphone market.

The world’s first trillion dollar company released its next series of iPhones just recently. The smartphones take cues from the widely famous iPhone X from last year and boasts certain upgrades on top of it. Follow along this blog to read about everything that was announced on the Apple’s annual keynote.

For iPhone users in Ghana they can not use the Esim capability since none of the mobile phone carriers in Ghana are on that technology. To enjoy the dual SIM in the new phones in Ghana you have to order the iPhone with the stand dual SIM slots which was made by Apple specifically for the Chinese and Asian market .

Apple has made its keynote event official  by sending out invites. The hardware focused event is to be held on Sep 12, 10AM PDT. The event will take place in Steve Jobs Theater inside Apple Park campus. Apple sent the invite with “Gather around” theme. The image depicts Apple Park design with gold color which probably means that new iPhones are getting the aforementioned color. Apple launched iPhone X last year but only in white and matte black finishes.

Here is a rundown of everything you can expect from the event.

1. New iPhones

Apple is reported to have three iPhones for this year. An upgraded version of current iPhone X with same 5.8” OLED display and a lower price tag of $899. A larger iPhone X with 6.5” OLED screen that’s most likely to serve the plus model for this year. This model is likely to be priced at $999. And finally, a lower cost LCD model most probably replacing iPhone 8. It’s important to remember that we won’t be seeing any iPhones with bezels this year. The iPhone X design is what we have from this point on.

Both iPhone X and its plus variant are expected to come in black, white and gold colors. While the lower LCD model is expected to come in no less than five colors including rose gold and purple — or whatever Apple happens to call them.

2. Apple Watch Series 4

It’s not confirmed if Apple will call it series 4. But that’s what it will be called anyway. Apple Watch is expected to have more screen area this time while keeping the same overall size. That means removal of the bezels from Watch as well.

Better heart rate detection, more focus on fitness and notifications are supposed to be the key features.

3. iPad Pros

We are going to see an iPhone X design pasting on all other Apple products this year. The new iPad Pros are likely to get what iPhone X had last year. FaceID, removal of home button etc. What’s not clear is perhaps the notch. Remember, Apple reduced the bezels from iPad Pros last year to a degree where they are almost not even noticeable. So there is a chance that iPad Pros come with minor bezels as last year.

The new iPad Pros are likely to come in 11” and 13” sizes since Apple is focusing on productivity with these devices. The iPad 9.7” model and iPad Mini are likely to be ignored on the event.

4. Macs

It will be a huge surprise if Apple announces the rumored retina version of MacBook Air. Despite not getting the same treatment as MacBook Pros or the new MacBook, MacBook Air remains an important product in Apple lineup. People still love the unique design of the machine. However, with still no retina display it’s losing its charm. If Apple indeed does announce MacBook Air, it will be the talk of the event for sure. At least in the core Apple community.imac

Mac Mini or a pro version of it is also speculated. Mac Mini is in even worse shape than MacBook Air as of now. And is in need of a desperate update. Not just internally but also in physical form factor. It does not feel like Mini anymore. We might also see true tone finally coming to iMac. And there might be spec bump for MacBook too.

Apart from this it’s expected Apple might finally be giving us AirPower. Apple introduced the Wireless charging pad exactly a year ago but we are yet to hear when it’s going to ship it. And everyone’s favorite i.e. AirPods might be getting an update too (in black color please).

Apple previewed the new versions of iOS and Mac in WWDC earlier this year. We will be getting dates for their official release. New devices come with new OSs preloaded. Older devices are likely to get the updates in and around Sep 20th.

Six years after its introduction, the Apple Maps app is now starting to collect its own data, with a fleet of vehicles equipped with cameras and LIDARs flooding the streets of California to take their own view on things, instead of relying on third-party mapping data.

Apple is pouring a lot more resources (and thinking) into improving it so that it is now perfectly usable for your day-to-day navigation purposes but that’s still six years behind Google who has being updating their maps regularly to still better them. Looking for a restaurant on a Sunday afternoon? Google Maps.Need direction to a unknown place? Google Maps, even Iphone users still download and use Google Maps as their default navigation app.

You catch the drift, but Google Maps is still way ahead of Apple in the navigation game, and the latest user survey comes to prove it. Market researchers from the Manifest took the two apps to task, and asked around to see which one is more popular and why. It turns around that Google Maps plus Waze (again Google-owned) hold a vast 79% usage share, followed by Apple Maps with 11% and all car riding app all use Google Maps.

When asked why they prefer their first navigation choices, the respondents cited a litany of features that Google does better, such as clearer directions, more useful features, better interface, bike and pedestrian options and so on, outgunning Apple Maps in almost every important category imaginable. If you have never used Apple Maps, and wonder how much better the mapping and directions could be, just get an Apple device and try it out.

Counterpoint Research has revealed its latest Market Pulse report on which smartphone models were purchased most often around the world in the month of May.

According to purchase receipts, Apple has three models within the top five positions: the iPhone 8 Plus took fifth at 2.1 percent, the iPhone X was third at 2.3 percent and the iPhone 8 had pole position at 2.4 percent — it’s the first month in Counterpoint’s tracking that the iPhone X has not led Apple’s pack since its launch.

For Samsung, the Galaxy S9 was inches behind first at 2.4 percent while the Galaxy S9 Plus trailed the iPhone 8 Plus in sixth place at 2.1 percent. Sales in the United States were steady, but European sales slipped. Overall, the company expects that slowness to have a major impact of its second quarter earnings.

For Xiaomi, its budget Redmi 5A was fourth at 2.2 percent and the Redmi 5 Plus took ninth with a 1.3 percent share. The mid-range Huawei P20 lite was seventh and the high-end vivo X21 — with its in-display fingerprint sensor — followed, each with about 1.4 percent. Rounding the list was OPPO’s refreshed A83 with 1.2 percent. The Chinese brands did best in their home market as well as India.

As the big OEMs’ loosen up on the throttle for the spring, Chinese brands have taken up the rear of the ship. In April, both the Galaxy S9 and S9+ took the top spots while the Galaxy S8 was tenth. Five of the top ten shareholding spots were held by Apple that month. Xiaomi, with sixth and eighth positions, was the only Chinese representative.
